Room to Dance

On Friday and Saturday, you’ll have the chance to meet passionate students who may very well be the next Christopher Nolan, Britney Spears or Steven Spielberg of our time. Room to Dance, an annual Santa Fe College event that allows students to showcase their talents, is entirely produced, choreographed and performed by students.

As far as we could tell by the rehearsal on Thursday night (June 3), this show is sure to deliver laughs, drama and storytelling through the art of dance. From comedy to serious social commentary, this show covers it all. You can also expect to see solo performances, ensembles and, in one case, a performance with a person and a projected image.

Without the heart, drive and time each student has given, this show wouldn’t be possible. In fact, Rodney A. Brown, director of the event and music professor, is proud of the initiative they took. “They made my job a lot easier as a professor, and I can see these young people making the transition from students into artists.”

Students Lauren and Herman helped choreograph several of the performances. When asked about challenges faced, Lauren says “time crunching is the biggest challenge” (juggling classes and jobs while preparing for the show is tough). However, there is a reward for their investment. “This is a way for us to show the appreciation we have for our professors,” Herman says, “and all the hard work they put into us.”

Come see how talented these young visionaries are for yourself this weekend. Even though “you don’t get to see the sweat and hard work that goes into a performance,” Lauren says, “all that becomes evident when you experience the beauty of the end product.”

Room to Dance will be held at Santa Fe College’s E Building Auditorium at the Northwest campus on June 4 and 5 at 8pm. There is no admission to attend this event. However, donations are welcome to help fund next year’s event. The show runs about 90 minutes.
